Burger King: Hidden Whoppers

People spend hours watching their favorite videos on YouTube, but the commercials are often boring and not interactive. How can we make this traditional medium interactive using data in a clever and simple way to reward viewers for watching the full traditional 30 second ads?

Created in the spirit of cheap 70s-80s romance B movies in California and psychological tension build-up, we used YouTube’s traditional ad break to reward viewers with 1 free BK Whopper after 30 seconds of not skipping and watching our commercial to find their promo code. Once the 30 second traditional ad break appeared, we showed a variety of visuals and footage, romanticizing our famous Whopper. We hinted to the viewer they’d earn a free Whopper if they didn’t skip our 30 second ad, without knowing how long they’d have to keep watching. Once the viewer neared the end, a promo code appeared on screen that rewarded them with a free Whopper in the BK app for playing along.
